Did you know? Injections with neurotoxins such as Botox, Jeuveau, and Dysport are the most popular single cosmetic procedure in the U.S. They are primarily used improve the appearance of lines wrinkles that form as a result of day-to-day facial expressions like frowning, squinting, smiling. All neurotoxins on the market are made with active ingredient - Botulinum Toxin A. They each differ slightly.
Neurotoxins can also be used in many areas in the face and neck to help prevent aging. Generally, it is recommended to start getting injections with neurotoxins or “tox” before deep set wrinkles are formed. In the hands of a qualified and experienced injector “tox” injections are very safe, produce noticeable results, and are minimally invasive. Neurotoxins are injected into facial muscles to decrease movement and prevent wrinkles from forming. Generally, neurotoxins start working within seven days of injection; results usually last three to four months. At this time, it is recommended you return to the clinic for follow-up.
While some patients prefer to wait until they see visible lines to start “tox” injections, others prefer to start injections in their 20’s as preventative treatment. The theory is, when you prevent the lines from ever forming in first place, they will never form! Botox can be used from ages 20-upper 60’s or in some cases even in the 70’s.
Always choose a qualified, experienced injector. The best injector can dramatically improve your experience with injections. The injector needs to have the knowledge of muscles and how they can be manipulated to create a good aesthetic result. Make sure you have done your research prior to your first appointment so you can be prepared to ask questions during your consultation. At MK Aesthetix, our injector will always review your information, give you a chance to ask questions and to make changes with anything that was done previously. Our goal is to make sure you leave the office feeling confident about the process.
Where can neurotoxins be placed?
It is common to have tox injected into the forehead, between the eyes or the “11’s” and in the crows feet. But did you know neurotoxins can also be injected in many other areas of the face? Tox can be used:
* Glabella - 11’s between the eyes
* Forehead lines
* Crows feet
* Nasalis - to correct bunny lines
* Masseter- to help with jaw pain from TMJ and bruxism, or for facial slimming
* Chin - smooth out mental crease or to help with bumpy texture
* DAO - to help with downturned mouth
* Under the eyes - to decrease jelly roll appearance
* Lip - to “flip” the lip up
* Platysmal bands - to improve the appearance of the neck and to sharpen the jawline
* Around the mouth - to help correct an asymmetric smile
How do neurotoxins work?
Neurotoxin injections, such as Botox, Jeuveau, or Dysport, create a temporary inhibition of the nerve cell that causes muscles to contract. These specific, targeted muscles become weaker therefore decreasing movement and in turn relaxing wrinkles. You will still have slight movement of the muscles, but in a less exaggerated way. Results can be seen approximately 7 days after injections and the full result will be seen around 2-3 weeks. It is then recommended to make a trip back to the clinic for repeat injections at approximately 3-4 months as the neurotoxins will last about this long. If you decide not to continue injections, full muscle contraction will resume and any lines/wrinkles that were there originally will come back.
Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that can help reduce lines and wrinkles, plump or enhance the lips, and restore volume and fullness in the face. Dermal fillers can be helpful to decrease signs of aging. They can create a beautiful softness. Fillers are injected by the syringe and in general results last 6-18 months.
Lip fillers
Let’s be real, lip filler deserves its own category. Fillers in the lips can help correct asymmetries, reduce lines in the lips and around the mouth (commonly referred to as smoker's lines), define the shape of the lips and create crisper borders, increase hydration, or add overall volume and plump. Lips can accent the beauty of your face, give them the attention they deserve!
The most common filler injections done are lip fillers. According to the 2020 annual report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 2.6 million people received hyaluronic acid fillers. And while not everyone got lip injections, we know that a large percentage of those did.
We can be honest and say that sometimes fillers can get a little “carried away.” Our injector feels that it is her role and responsibility to help her patients make good decisions about when to stop adding more filler. Natural result is first and foremost, and if our injector does not feel that additional syringes will improve the overall aesthetic of the client, it will not be recommended.
It is very important to go to a qualified injector for lip injections. There are some dangerous devices and trends available that claim to create results similar to lip injections done by a qualified injector. There is no DIY system that is safe to produce results like an injector can, further if you are considering going to a non-qualified personal for injections please think again. This could be detrimental to not only the result on your face but also to your health.
Price-shopping or looking for the lowest deal possible can be a bad choice when you’re talking about any type of injection, but especially dermal fillers.

Sculptra is the industry's secret to reversing the signs of aging from the inside out. Curious if this could be a good treatment for you. Here are some commonly asked questions!
● How much will I need?
It will be different for everyone! It depends on the kind of results you want and your skin type. For facial rejuvenation, it's recommended to have three sessions, two months apart,
with at least two vials or more each visit.
● What is the difference between Sculptra and Filler?
Filler is a gel HA that's injected to add volume and shape to the skin. Sculptra when injected works as a collagen stimulator so that you won't see results instantly, but instead over time as the collagen rebuilds and smooths the dermis.
